An Invitation to Membership

8th Day Center for Justice was founded in 1974 as a joint effort by six Roman Catholic religious congregations to actualize the Scriptural mandate to work for justice. The name 8th Day was chosen to acknowledge that creations is still in progress. Today, over 40 congregations belong to the Center. 8th Day Center provides congregations a variety of ways to commit tot his work for justice. Participation in our work is an investment in efforts to change systems which suppress and to create a more just society. We invite your religious congregation to consider a relationship with 8th Day Center. Various levels of involvement, listed below, are described on the following pages. Each level of involvement has a range of support. Because membership in 8th Day Center allows a congregation to extend its own commitment to justice, congregations are encouraged to be as generous as possible in their financial support of the Center.

Sponsoring Members

A Sponsoring Member of 8th Day Center for Justice is a religious congregation which fulfils the following terms: Contributes $5,500 to $20,000 to the operating expenses of the Center. (For large congregations, at least $10 per mailing address is necessary to cover costs) Provides living expenses for a designated persons who will be a full-time staff member of the Center Agrees to have one person from the Congregation’s executive leadership serve on the board of the Center Benefits of Sponsoring Membership Direct involvement in the day-to-day work of the Center through your support of a specific individual on staff representing your community Participation in the works of justice undertaken by the Center; collaboration in efforts for systemic change Participation in policy-making and direction-setting through Board membership Acknowledgment as a Sponsoring Member in 8th Day Center publications, literature and Web Page Regular mailings to congregation mailing addresses of Centerings, a quarterly publication Weekly e-mail bulletins on breaking issues Packets on selected issues sent to congregation mailing addresses Use of audio visual materials (postage charge only) Workshops, seminars, speaking engagements as requested for the membership, leadership teams, etc.

Member Friends

A Member Friend of 8th Day Center for Justice is a religious congregation which fulfills the following terms: Contributes $2,500 to $20,000 to the operating expenses of the Center. (For large congregations, at least $10 per mailing address is necessary to cover costs.) Agrees to have one person form the Congregation’s executive leadership serve on the Board of the Center Benefits of Member Friend Participation in the works of justice undertaken by the Center; collaboration in efforts for systemic change Participation in policy-making and direction-setting through Board membership Acknowledgment as a Member Friend in 8th Day Center publications, literature and Web Page Regular mailings to congregation mailing addresses of Centerings, a quarterly publication Weekly e-mail bulletins on breaking issues Packets on selected issues sent to congregation mailing addresses Use of audiovisual materials (postage charge only) Workshops, seminars, speaking engagements as requested for the membership, leadership teams, etc. on a contractual basis at a reduced rate

Contributing Members

A Contributing Member of 8th Day Center for Justice is a religious congregation which fulfills the following terms: Contributes $750 to $2,499 to the operating expenses of the Center Benefits of Contributing Membership Participation in the works of justice undertaken by the Center; collaborating in efforts for systemic change Acknowledgment as Contributing Member in 8th Day Center publications, literature and Web Page Five (5) congregations mailing addresses receive monthly mailings of Centerings, a quarterly publication of 8th Day Center, and special mailings regarding events and issues, (Permission for duplication for such materials included) Weekly e-mail bulletins on breaking issues Workshops, seminars, speaking engagements as requested for the membership, leadership teams, etc. on a contractual basis at a reduced rate

Collective Sponsors

Collective Membership in 8th Day Center for Justice is a form of membership in which two or more provinces or congregations participate as joint members of 8th Day Center (e.g., three Franciscan congregations share one Collective Membership; two provinces share one Collective Membership, etc.). Such Collective Members fulfill the terms of either a Sponsoring Membership or a Membership Friend with the appropriate benefits applying. Collective members share one Board position which represents all the parties of this collaborative membership.

Other Ways to Participate

Other religious congregations participate in 8th Day Center’s efforts to create a more just society by contributing to specific projects sponsored by the Center (e.g., the Good Friday Walk) and allocating grants to assist with the operating expenses of the Center. Members of some congregations also volunteer their services to the work of the Center.
